David's Daily Devotion for June 16

June 16, 2022 - Good Morning! It’s Thursday, June 16.

On June 16, 1858, Abraham Lincoln was nominated to run for the U.S. Senate. On that day he delivered one of his most famous speeches, a speech that included the famous line, “A house divided against itself cannot stand”.

But that phrase wasn’t original to Lincoln. Like so many of his memorable lines, it came from the Bible. In Mark 3 (and in Matthew and Luke, as well), Jesus speaks those words to the Pharisees. The more accurate translation of that word “house” is “household” or . . . “family”.

Last night, in Los Angeles, the Southern Baptist family ended its annual meeting. It was a meeting that highlighted to the world the divisions within my denomination. And now the hard work begins. The work of moving forward with a common purpose.  When there is general agreement within a group, that task of building consensus is relatively easy, and can be accomplished through human strength. But to build unity amid division is exceedingly hard and can only be accomplished through the strength of God.

Thank you for remembering our Baptist family in your prayers.

Meet you back here tomorrow,

Bro. David
