David's Daily Devotion for June 9

June 9, 2022 - Good Morning!  It’s Thursday, June 9.

In the summer of 1967, a very odd event occurred, one of the strangest moments in the history of popular music. A year earlier, Hollywood producers had created a “made for TV” rock band.  They called it “The Monkees”. The four actors (mediocre musicians, at best) became instant celebrities and their show climbed to the top of the ratings.

The TV executives moved quickly to capitalize on this success. An album was hastily recorded, with the instruments played, not by The Monkees, but by studio musicians. And a national tour was booked for that summer of 1967. Booked as the opening act was a guitarist named Jimi Hendrix.

That summer, Hendrix' music was drowned out by shouts of "We want the Monkees!"  The crowds had no idea who stood before them. They had no idea what they were witnessing. He quit the tour after only seven concerts. A year later The Monkees TV show was cancelled and they became an amusing footnote in music history. And Jimi Hendrix is now considered the greatest rock guitarist who ever lived.

In Luke Chapter four, we read about a very odd occurrence in the life of Jesus. After gaining a huge following through His teaching and His miracles, Jesus returned to His home town, Nazareth. He stood in the synagogue and read words from Isaiah 61, words of prophecy about The Chosen One, the Messiah. Then Jesus sat down and said, "Today you have seen this prophecy fulfilled". And the people of His home town proceeded to very nearly kill Him.  They had no idea who stood before them. They had no idea what they were witnessing.

Meet you back here tomorrow,

Bro. David
