David's Daily Devotion for March 12

March 12, 2024 - Good Morning! It's March 12.

One of my favorite hymn writers was born on this day in 1826. His name was Robert Lowry. Heard of him? Maybe not. But you've certainly heard of his hymns. He wrote more than 500 of them. Here's just a few -

*All the Way My Savior Leads Me
*Low in the Grave He Lay
*I Need Thee Every Hour
*We're Marching to Zion
*Shall We Gather at the River
*Nothing But the Blood

Lowry died in November of 1899, just 4 weeks before the dawn of the 20th century. Along with writers like Fanny Crosby, he created what we know as the 19th century gospel song, a style of worship that is still a vital part of our praise in the 21st century.

But if you had asked Robert Lowry who he was, what was his calling, he would have said that he was a pastor. He served churches in this way throughout his life, and it is said that he was a mesmerizing speaker. Technology to record the human voice didn't exist during Lowry's life, so that is lost to history. But the part of his life that he considered a hobby, writing hymns, has become his legacy, and when we rise and sing "Nothing But the Blood" in 2024, almost two centuries after his birth, the voice of Robert Lowry speaks again.

Meet you back here tomorrow,
Bro. David
