March 4, 2026 - Good Morning. It’s Wednesday, March 4.
At this moment, the focus of all the news programs and networks and internet sites is on one place - Iran. Does the Bible mention this place? Does Iran have a place in Scripture? Let’s take a quick look at that question this morning.
The region we now call Iran is mentioned many times in the Old Testament. We first encounter it in Genesis 10 as the kingdom of Elam. The Elamites were descendants of Noah, and by the time of Abraham had grown into a powerful force in the ancient world. But, six centuries before Bethlehem, the most powerful force in the world, Babylon, conquered Elam. It conquered Israel, as well, and the period known as the Exile began. 70 years later the Persian Empire overthrew the Babylonians and a new character, Persian King Cyrus, appeared on the world scene. Cyrus allowed the exiles to return home and supported the rebuilding of the Temple that the Babylonians had destroyed. These years dominate the Old Testament story, and especially books like Esther, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Nehemiah, Ezra, and others. These years so dominated the area we call Iran, that many still refer to it as Persia.
As the New Testament begins, we meet the mysterious figures called the Magi. They most probably came from the region of Iran, and took the Good News back with them. In Acts 2, the Elamites are mentioned among those who had come to Jerusalem for Pentecost. They heard Peter’s great sermon, and took the Gospel Story back home. Finally, if you are a student of End Times theology, you know that Iran figures prominently in that prophetic philosophy.
The Bible is an ancient book. But it connects, over and over, with our modern world. It remains relevant. It remains timely. It remains powerful.
Meet you back here tomorrow,
David
