David's Daily Devotion for May 10

May 10, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Friday, May 10.

We end our series on Mothers of the Bible today and focus not on a Bible character, but on a woman who loved the Bible and was called to teach it with clarity and eloquence.

Faye Estell Wortham Mathis was a church organist, a soprano soloist, a pastor's wife, and a mother of four, of whom I am the youngest. And she was a gifted Bible teacher. My dad was a preacher, one of the best I've ever heard. I didn't inherit that gift, but have great respect for those who walk to a pulpit every Sunday with something meaningful and powerful to say.

My mother's gift was a quieter one. For many years she taught the Bible to a young couples class. I vividly remember her staying up late on Saturday nights, with her study books spread out on the kitchen table, preparing her lesson. And, over the years, I remember how she became something of a surrogate mother to the young mothers in that class.

When my mom went on to glory in 2010, the world lost a master teacher. And now she sits at the feet of the Master.

Happy Mother's Day to all our mothers!

Meet you back here on Monday,
Bro. David
