David's Daily Devotion for May 21

May 21, 2026 - Good Morning! It’s Thursday, May 21.

There’s a little verse in a little book by a little prophet... that has a BIG message. You probably know it well. It’s one of my favorites - Micah 6:8. “He has shown you, O man, what is good, and what the Lord requires of you. To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” The secret of a successful life in a nutshell. And a verse that always reminds me of one of my favorite songs from one of my favorite Broadway musicals.

On May 21, 1971, a show premiered at a small theater in New York City. It was called “Godspell” and took its theme, surprisingly, from the Book of Matthew and from Christ’s Sermon on the Mount. The little musical was a BIG hit, and in 1973 was turned into a Hollywood movie. A live production has been playing somewhere in the world pretty much ever since. During my college years I had the pleasure of playing piano in the pit band of one such production in Houston.

Godspell features lots of great, singable, inspirational songs. Songs like “Prepare Ye the Way”, “By My Side”, and “All Good Gifts.” Many of their lyrics come from scripture and from old hymns. And its most famous song, “Day By Day”, is now, 55 years later, included in many hymnals. See if it reminds you of that little verse from Micah.

Day by day, day by day
O, dear Lord, three things I pray
To see Thee more clearly
Love Thee more dearly
Follow Thee more nearly
Day by Day

Meet you back here tomorrow,
David
