October 22, 2026 - Good Morning! It’s Thursday, October 22.
Is it just me, or does it seem like every other TV commercial right now is a political ad? Election Day is coming soon (and can’t come soon enough!). This is a big one, for sure, with races for governor, state legislators, U.S. Congress and Senate, plus all the local positions. The president isn’t running this year, but in the year 1836, on October 22, there was a presidential election - not for the United States, but for the brand new Republic of Texas. And the new chief executive was a gentleman named Samuel Houston.
Sam Houston’s political resume reads like an election ballot. He was the District Attorney of Nashville, a trusted aide to President Andrew Jackson, a U.S. congressman and senator, and the governor of both Tennessee and Texas. And six months before becoming president, he held the title of general, as he led the Texians to victory over the Mexican army at the Battle of San Jacinto, winning independence for Texas. Speaking as a proud son of the Lone Star State... Sam Houston is our George Washington.
But, like many gifted and successful people, Houston had his demons. The abuse of alcohol, in particular, had plagued him for many years - until he met a young woman named Margaret Lea. She became his wife and helped him to find control and contentment in his life. She was also the guiding light that led Houston to join Independence Baptist Church. He was baptized in a creek by the president of Baylor University, in front of a great crowd of witnesses. An amazing life. An amazing testimony of faith.
Meet you back here tomorrow,
David
