On this day, in 1978, Mother Maybelle went to heaven. Maybelle Carter was born in 1909 in Nickelsville, Virginia (population 327). At the tender age of 18 she formed the legendary Carter Family Trio with her brother-in-law A.P. and her cousin Sara. June Carter was her daughter and Johnny Cash her son-in-law. It was all about family with Maybelle. And she is considered to be the “Mother” of country music.
Rolling Stone magazine rated Maybelle Carter the 17th greatest guitarist in music history. She created a whole new way of playing the guitar, called the “Carter Scratch”. She was equally proficient on the autoharp, transforming that instrument’s standing. She is a member of the Hall of Fame in four different styles of music.
Her hit songs were many, and include classics like “Wildwood Flower” and “Keep on the Sunny Side.” But, as we acknowledge the anniversary of her home-going day, we remember her most famous song - a song about heaven.
