David's Daily Devotion for October 6

October 6, 2026 - Good Morning! It’s Tuesday, October 6.

On October 6, 1927, a memorable movie premiered in New York City. It was called “The Jazz Singer” and was the very first “talkie”, a film with synchronized sound. The audience that night was stunned by this new technology and reacted with a standing ovation. Movie-goers across the country, and then around the world, followed suit. The silent film era was over. Sound had won.

Sound plays a memorable part throughout the Bible. In the Old Testament, the sweet sounds of David’s lyre calmed the troubled mind of King Saul. And when Gideon’s tiny army went up against a huge enemy, they didn’t use swords and shields, but the weapon of sound. On command his soldiers broke clay jars, blew trumpets, and shouted - and the enemy destroyed itself in panic.

Mark opened his New Testament gospel with the baptism of Jesus, and when Christ emerged from the Jordan River, a sound from above thundered, “This is my Son, whom I love, and with whom I am well pleased”. The Book of Acts opens with the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, and Luke describes it as “the sound of a rushing, mighty wind”. Later in Acts we hear the sound of midnight hymns, as Paul and Silas sang their praise to God while sitting in chains in a Philippian jail.

Sound has played a memorable part in my life, particularly the sound of choirs. I’ve sung in professional choirs and volunteer ones, classical choruses and church groups. There’s just something about the human voice, especially in harmony with other voices. But the finest earthly choir pales in comparison with what the shepherds heard that night in Bethlehem - “And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, Glory to God the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill to men”.

Imagine that sound!

Meet you back here tomorrow,
David
