David's Daily Devotion for September 17

September 17, 2025 - Good Morning! It’s Wednesday, September 17.

His given name was Hiram, but everybody called him Hank. He was born September 17, 1923 in Mount Olive, Alabama. He would grow up to become one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. Happy Birthday, Hank Williams.

Williams wrote 55 songs that made it into the Top Ten, with a dozen of them reaching all the way to #1. Classics like “Your Cheatin’ Heart,” “Hey Good Lookin’,” “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry,” “Move it On Over,” “Why Don’t You Love Me,” and my personal favorite, the haunting “I Can’t Help It If I’m Still in Love With You.”

On New Year’s Day, 1952, Hank Williams was on his way to do a concert in Canton, Ohio. He never made it. He died on the way. He was just 29. The news was slow in coming, and the huge concert crowd was already assembled in the hall when the sad announcement came. All at once, spontaneously, they began to sing one of Hank’s songs. Not one of the #1 hits. Not one of his “honky tonk” songs, as he called them. Not one of the sad ballads of lost love.

It was this one.

I saw the light. I saw the light.
No more darkness, no more night.
Now I’m so happy, no sorrow in sight.
Praise the Lord, I saw the light.

Meet you back here tomorrow,
David
