David's Daily Devotion for September 22

September 22, 2022 - Good Morning! It’s Thursday, September 22.

One of the features of our morning worship service at First Baptist Center is a “welcome time”. Our congregation rises and shares a moment of greeting and fellowship with those around them. We sing a lively song during the welcome, and this Sunday that song will be Hank Williams’ “I Saw the Light”.

Hank Williams was just 23 years old when he wrote this song. His mother was driving him home late one night after a concert. As they approached their hometown, probably to wake him up, she said, “I saw the light”. With a gifted songwriter, sometimes just a single phrase can supply inspiration. And Hank Williams was a gifted songwriter. In his brief career he had 11 number-one hits. He’s in the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the Country Music Hall of Fame, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame - the only person with that honor.

Hank Williams died at the young age of 29, a victim of alcoholism and drug abuse. His short life was characterized by poor decisions and wrong turns. But, on that September night in 1953, there was a moment of light on a dark journey.

I was a fool to wander and stray
Straight is the gate and narrow the way
Now I have traded the wrong for the right
Praise the Lord, I saw the light!

Meet you back here tomorrow,
Bro. David
