DETCOG to Meet in San Jacinto County; March 24th Agenda

March 21, 2022 - The Board of Directors of the Deep East Texas Council of Governments (DETCOG) will meet Thursday, March 24th at the San Jacinto County Shelter located at 155 Live Oak in Coldspring, Texas. A luncheon begins at 12 noon with the business meeting to follow.

The Board will consider authorizing a Request for Proposals from organizations interested in providing senior citizen nutrition services in each of the 11 DETCOG counties. This includes congregate meals at local senior centers, home delivered meals, and other services.

According to Holly Anderson, Director of the Deep East Texas Area Agency on Aging, senior nutrition services are funded with federal dollars through the Older Americans Act. "Every four or five years we go through a competitive process to determine the organizations that are best suited to provide these services in each county," she said. "The RFP process is open to governmental entities, nonprofits, and even for-profit entities; however, we must receive prior approval from the state before contracting with a for-profit organization."

The DETCOG Board will also consider resolutions in support of two special observances in April: Fair Housing Month and Child Abuse Prevention Month. The Board will hear updates on various other DETCOG programs and services.

DETCOG is both a state regional planning commission and a federal economic development district and includes the counties of Angelina, Houston, Nacogdoches, Newton, Polk, Sabine, San Augustine, San Jacinto, Shelby, Trinity, and Tyler. Its program areas include Community and Economic Development, Public Safety, Emergency 9-1-1 Communications, Aging and Disability Services, the 2-1-1 Area Information Center, the Family and Youth Success program, and the DETCOG Regional Housing Authority.

DETCOG Board Meetings are open to the public and visitors are always welcome. "We welcome anyone to come and learn more about DETCOG and the services we provide," said Board President and Nacogdoches Mayor Pro Tem Roy Boldon.
