Downtown Construction Advances with New Intersection Now Open

The traffic barricades in front of the Shelby County Courthouse are missing! Many don't want them returned!

June 2, 2020 - Since October of 2019, downtown travelers have had to navigate detours around the square to get to one side or the other. Downtown merchants have suffered greatly with very little shoppers willing to endure the construction signs redirecting them except when necessary. Today, June 2, a glimmer of light shines downtown as travelers can once again travel all the way through the square on San Augustine Street as well as turn onto Austin Street from the square.

Travelers can once again take a right onto Austin Street from San Augustine Street.

Shana Brittain, owner of Southern Seasons, took to the street this morning with confetti and danced in the street to celebrate barricade signs being removed and at least some traffic to her business being restored.

As of today the only street blocked to through traffic on the square is Austin Street in front of Citizen's Bank, the County Clerk's office, Factory Connection, All Hours Fitness, The Balcony, YoYo's Barber Shop, and Gatherings.

A traveler celebrates being able to drive through the newly renovated intersection.

More road barricades will be installed as construction advances to additional streets. Go downtown now while you can drive three of the streets around the square with ease of access to all of the businesses.

The construction project is scheduled to be a year long and to finish on time it has four months left. Let's all pray for good weather to allow for construction to progress quickly and we can all once again fully enjoy our beautiful downtown square!
