Emergency Personnel Participate in School Safety Meeting

August 7, 2024 - The Shelby County Sheriff’s Department hosted a “School Safety Meeting” at the Shelby County Extension office Wednesday, August 7, 2024 in Center.

Representatives were present from law enforcement, fire departments, medical staff and schools.

With the school year quickly approaching, all agencies are taking proactive measures to ensure they are prepared to address any issue.

Shelby County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Chad Hooper shared that these meetings are required by law to be held twice a year, and those required to be included are: the county sheriff, or designee; municipal police chief, or designee; all constables, or designees; school district chief of police or each school district security coordinator; DPS representative; all other state agencies, county representatives; county EMS command staff; municipal EMS command staff; county fire department command staff; each school district superintendent or designee; each open enrollment charter district superintendent, or designee; and all others considered appropriate by the sheriff, also a federal law enforcement officer serving the county.

Chief Hooper shared that school safety and active shooter plans are a lot of what they cover in these meetings including planning and strategy. He also states the school districts are required to hold meeting as well.

“This gets us all in one spot, everybody can communicate about our needs, our wants, vulnerabilities and things like that,” said Chief Hooper.

Sheriff Kevin Windham appreciates everyone taking time out of their day to attend this meeting.
