Fifty Center MS Beta Students Advance to National Convention; Demonstrate Service to Others

February 21, 2020 - Fifty Center Middle School Beta students advanced to compete at the National Junior Beta Convention to be held June 19-22 at the Fort Worth Convention Center. To advance, the CMS Beta students had to place in the top three of their event at the Texas Junior Beta Convention held February 13-14 in Grapevine, Texas.

Fifty students competed in Songfest singing custom lyrics "BETA" to the tune of "Baby" by Justin Bieber. The group placed 2nd overall with their performance.

Individuals who placed in other events were John Ford, Avery Lawson, and Nancy Lara. John Ford placed 1st in Recyclable Art with his greenhouse created from plastic bottles. Avery Lawson and Nancy Lara placed 2nd in Service Learning Showcase with their "Leaving Our Fingerprints All Over the World" presentation.

BETA's motto for the 2020 Texas Junior convention was "BETA as far as you can see." Their mission statement is "To promote the ideals of academic achievement, character, service and leadership among elementary and secondary school students" with four characteristics highlighted: achievement, character, leadership, and service. As a demonstration of service, CMS students stopped at the East Texas Food Bank in Tyler on their way to convention demonstrating the motto - Let Us Lead by Serving Others.

While at the East Texas Food Bank, the students helped box 13,640 meals and filled 528 senior boxes.

The National Beta Club is the largest independent, non-profit, educational youth organization in America. And for more than 80 years, it has prepared today's students to be tomorrow's leaders.
