February 7, 2023 - Shelbyville High School students, Maddie Lout, Travis Caporali, Ava Silva, and Aubree Camp will be competing in the 113th U.I.L. state CX debate tournament held at the University of Texas in Austin in March.

In district 23AA, freshmen, Maddie and Travis placed 2nd, and seniors, Ava and Aubree placed first with Ava being awarded top speaker. “UIL debate competition motivates students and provides them with practical application for the skills they are developing,” said Jana Riggins, UIL State Debate Director. “This year’s debate topic prompted students to research and form their own thoughts and opinions on the real-world issue our government is challenged with: Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase its security cooperation with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in one or more of the following areas: artificial intelligence, biotechnology, cybersecurity.”

Shelbyville Speech and Debate is coached by Emily Sowell and Crystal Harrison.
