In God's Word: The Living Water

November 11, 2019 - One day as Jesus passed through Samaria he stopped near the town of Sychar at the field that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jesus sat by Jacob's well which was also there and rested for he was tired from his travels.

As he sat there by the well a woman came to draw water and since Jesus had no means by which he could draw water he asked the woman of Samaria for a drink of water from Jacob's well.

The Samaritan woman then said to him; "How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?" (For Jews have no dealings with samaritans.) John 4:9)

And Jesus answered her, saying; "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, "Give me a drink", you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water." (John 4:10)

What, one might ask, is this (gift of God) that Jesus is speaking of and what is the (living water) that he would have given her?

"Repent and be baptized every one if you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." (Acts 2:38)

The gift of God is the indwelling of the one who accepts Jesus Christ as Lord with the Holy Spirit of God.

The indwelling of the Holy Spirit is the promise that Jesus made to us before he ascended back to heaven.

"And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you." (John 14:16-17)

The living water is the guidance and teaching by the Helper that satisfies the longing within everyone. That longing for spiritual enlightenment, that emptiness, which is within every human being from birth until it is filled by the Holy Spirit of God.

As Jesus made clear, there is no other way to the kingdom of God but through him.

"I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." (John 14:6)

Only by accepting Jesus Christ as Lord does one receive salvation from the penalties of sin and only by accepting Jesus Christ as Lord can one receive the Holy Spirit to guide one through life.

As the woman of Samaria bragged on the well which Jacob had dug and given to the Samaritans for water Jesus said to her; "Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life." (John 4:14)

"The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water!" (John 14:15)

How about you, do you thirst for more, do you seek for joy and happiness in your daily life?

There is but one place to find them, in the Holy Spirit which one receives only when one accepts Jesus Christ as Lord. Accept him today and know forever the joy and peace that comes by living in the Lord Jesus Christ.
