"Great Day on Hondo Creek" by Doug Fincher

“I will speak of the glorious honor of thy majesty, and of thy wondrous works.” Psalms 145:5

July 29, 2024 - On our way to Big Bend years ago, Pam and I visited Hondo, Texas. There was the familiar sign: “Welcome: This is God’s Country. Please don’t drive through it like Hell.” We ate lunch at the Taqueria Mexican Restaurant… then drove to Hondo Creek. It was a gorgeous day… a blue sky… 70 degrees… and the water was crystal clear.

As we walked down to the creek bed, thousands of beautiful butterflies covered us… reds… yellows… blues... every imaginable color! We had arrived during their fall migration and saw dozens of species we’d never seen before. While Pam sat on a rock to put her makeup on, I hurriedly grabbed my camera and began snapping shots.

Suddenly a four-wheel-drive jeep rolled up and stopped in the shallow creek bed. “Have you found what you’re looking for?” the young Game Warden asked. Obviously, Officer Jorge Tamayo had been watching from the high bridge and was curious about our activity.

After I explained what we were doing, he said snake poachers were a big problem in his district. ‘They come from all over the nation to catch them and many hunt them at night by shining their eyes from their vehicles.” “That’s just as illegal as hunting deer that way,” he added.

After an enjoyable visit with the Warden, we returned to our RV and viewed our pictures. What a day we’d had! Photographing God’s creative beauty… wading in the cool creek… and meeting a new friend…

… was “a joy unspeakable and full of glory.”
