September 2, 2016 - A woman perished in a house fire which took place in the Aiken Community on Friday, September 2, 2016.
The West Shelby Volunteer Fire Department (WSVFD) was dispatched to the scene of the fire located 293 CR 1210 not far from State Highway 7 West at around 12:30am, and they were instructed the man in the home had gotten out, but his wife was still inside.
When firemen began arriving, the house was fully engulfed in flames. Center Police Officers responded to the scene as county units were initially on the other side of the county responding to another call, until they arrived on the scene of the fire with ACE EMS.
Firemen with the Center Fire Department were then dispatched to the scene to assist the WSVFD. Working together, the firemen were able to extinguish the majority of the flames; however, the woman in the house had perished.
Maxie Eaves, Justice of the Peace Precinct 1, pronounced Sally Chandler dead at the scene at around 3:30am. She was transported from the scene by Watson & Sons Funeral Home.
The fire is under investigation by the Shelby County Sheriff's Department.
