Meets with Local Long Term Care Leaders on Needs of Skilled Nursing Care Community
September 30, 2024 – Soon-to-be state representative for Texas’ District 11 Joanne Shofner recently visited Focused Care at Center to meet with senior residents and long term care team members to learn more about skilled nursing care and the overall challenges in health care delivery.
“Mrs. Shofner spent nearly 2 hours with us asking questions about the needs of skilled nursing care and listening to our answers,” said Hollie Adams, Executive Director of Operations for Focused Care at Center. “I am hopeful when the legislature convenes in January that we have a state representative who understands how long term providers strive to deliver quality care with compassion and what we need to help us do that.”
Adams outlined what many Texas skilled nursing providers are asking state legislators for in the 89th legislative session beginning January 14, 2025:
Narrow the payment gap in the Medicaid rate shortfall, currently a $25 per patient per day (ppd) loss - by increasing the rate by at least $12 ppd. The majority of residents in skilled nursing care are Medicaid beneficiaries, therefore, having a Medicaid rate that pays for the actual cost of care is crucial.
Make up the difference of current funding for resident dietary needs and what it actually costs for food, wages and supplies. Given inflation and the rise in food prices there is a $9 per patient per day deficit for nutritional care.
Fully fund the licensure requirement for Facility and Operations – which includes wages, utilities and insurance. Currently, there is a $3 ppd shortfall for average licensure costs. Long term care communities must be in licenses to legally operate.
“I am looking forward to representing the people of Texas’ District 11 and ensuring their voices are heard in Austin,” said Shofner, who is unopposed in the general election. “Our seniors deserve high quality long term care and I appreciate the individuals who dedicate their professional lives to delivering that care. Center has a rich history and a thriving community. It will be my honor to be its state representative.”
