Monday morning, April 24, at 7:25am a call came in stating that DeSoto Parish Sheriff’s Office had been notified that there was a fire at a Mexican restaurant, but the source was unclear as to which one it was. The JVFD responded to the El Ranchero on Highway 7 East but found no visible smoke or flames. DeSoto Fire District 1 also responded to the Mayte’s Mexican restaurant in Logansport but again found no fire.

Tuesday afternoon, April 25, at 1pm a page was received for a single-vehicle crash on FM 139. The JVFD arrived to find that a pickup truck had struck a power pole, breaking the pole in half while still being suspended by the lines. The JVFD medical team went to work on the driver’s injuries while other members provided traffic control on the roadway. Allegiance EMS later arrived to transport the driver to an emergency room, and a power line crew replaced the broken pole.

Wednesday morning, April 26, at 7:47am a call was received for a 97-year-old female having severe back and leg pain at a residence on County Road 3203. Allegiance EMS was also notified of this call.

Wednesday night at 11:01pm a call came in referencing a tractor trailer, that had been hauling cattle, broken down in the road on Highway 7 East. Shortly thereafter a deputy with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office arrived and took control of the scene and the JVFD was allowed to cancel their response.

At the Monday night training meeting the JVFD were able to test out a new combination spreader/cutter tool on a wrecked big rig provided by Tristate Vacuum and Rental. Tristate also provided an old sedan for the JVFD to demonstrate the new tool on to many of the company’s staff. The new “combie” tool bridges the gap between a spreading tool and a cutting tool for when minutes count on an accident scene and is a valued addition to the JVFDs arsenal.

With that, this edition of the report will come to a close. The Joaquin Volunteer Fire Department hopes everyone has a great and safe week ahead.
