Dear Editor:

August 5, 2020 - Medical experts and scientists have reported over and over again that wearing masks not only protects others, but also protects the wearer. In places where mask-wearing is the norm, Covid cases have declined.

On July 3, 2020, citing this, Governor Abbott directed that “all Texans over the age of ten are to wear a face covering over the nose and mouth in public spaces in counties with 20 or more positive Covid-19 cases.”

This, of course, includes Shelby County. Some businesses and individuals are doing what our Governor has ordered; however, too many are not. Why would someone not follow a measure that is for the public good—as well as for their own personal health?

Some quote medical advice from politicians and/or unqualified “experts.” In political news this week, Louie Gohmert and Herman Cain have been examples of what happens when you do not mask up in public—and ignore science. Plus, wearing a mask doesn’t give you Covid, like using a Kleenex doesn’t make you catch a cold.

Some say, “It’s a free country.” In many respects it is. But we still can’t pass school buses unloading, break into line at the grocery store, enter a restaurant barefooted, or cut down trees in a neighbor’s yard. In other words, we can’t endanger others’ rights or health.

Wearing a mask is not a political statement, for or against someone or something. This is a virus we’re fighting, and we should ALL be concerned about getting it under control.

Wear a mask... save a life. Maybe even yours.
