NWS Issues Flood Alert for Shelby County, Surrounding Areas

August 2, 2017 - The National Weather Service in Shreveport has issued an Urban and Small Stream Flood Advisory for, Shelby County in eastern Texas, Northern San Augustine County in eastern Texas, Southeastern Panola County in northeastern Texas, Northern Sabine County in eastern Texas, Sabine Parish in northwestern Louisiana, Southeastern Rusk County in northeastern Texas, Northeastern Nacogdoches County in eastern Texas until 1:45pm CDT.

At 10:52am CDT, Doppler radar indicated heavy rain that will cause urban and small stream flooding in the advisory area. Up to three to four inches of rain have already fallen.

Some locations that may experience flooding include Carthage, Center, Milam, Many, San Augustine, Zwolle, Tenaha, Timpson, Garrison, Joaquin, Converse, Patroon, Bland Lake, Neuville, Shelbyville, Oak Grove, Huxley, Gary City, Noble and Jericho.  

Precautionary/Preparedness Actions: Turn around, don`t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Keep children away from storm drains, culverts, creeks and streams. Water levels can rise rapidly and sweep children away. A Flood Advisory means river or stream flows are elevated, or ponding of water in urban or other areas is occurring or is imminent.
