Officers Capture Escaped Inmate in Woods

 

 

May 25, 2016 - Law enforcement officials responded to Borders Pole mill located behind Tyson off Shelbyville street in Center at 10:30am on Wednesday, May 25, 2016 following reports an escaped inmate from the Shelby County Sheriff's Department was spotted there.

Officers from the Center Police Department, Shelby County Sheriff's Department, Texas Department of Public Safety and local constables responded to the location and entered the woods in the area where he was last seen.

As the officers trailed Giovani Angel, 19, of Center through the woods, additional officers surrounded the location. He was finally cornered by Sheriff's Deputy Kurtes Lawrence and Center Police Officer John Welch who captured him behind a residence just off State Highway 7 East near Railroad Avenue. The officers then escorted him out of the woods at 11:15am to a waiting patrol unit which transported him to the Shelby County Jail.

Officer Welch was also transported to the Nacogdoches Medical Center - Center Emergency Department by private vehicle for possible injuries.
