Shelby County Local Election Results, All Boxes In

March 2, 2016 - Election results for Shelby County were slow coming in March 1, 2016 with final totals not calculated until close to midnight. Higher voter turnout than projected for the Republican Party left election workers having to print ballots. The printed ballots could not be run through the machines and required hand counting by volunteers.

The process for hand counting ballots requires 3-person teams who mark down in log books as each selected candidates name is read and totals compared in the end to ensure accuracy.

Now that all boxes are in, Shelby County will have two local run-off races, District Judge 123rd Judicial District and Constable Precinct 3, with none of the candidates receiving over 50% of the total votes in either race.

Three incumbents were defeated. In the Commissioner Pct 3 race Travis Rodgers was defeated by Charles Barr and Constable Pct 4 Bryan Gray was defeated by Jake Metcalf. In the District Judge 123rd Judicial District race incumbent Charles "Brick" Dickerson was defeated by Rafferty and Parker.

In the Statewide race for Railroad Commissioner, Wayne Christian carried 78% of Shelby County. With 71.94% of the total precincts, Christian has 19.85% of the votes only behind Gary Gates who has 29.18% and a run-off election looks to be unavoidable. Without all precincts in, it is unknown at this time if Christian will be in the run-off.

Note from the Editor: As volunteers to count ballots were needed, myself and Scott Flowers along with Jesse Jacobs with KDET radio were recruited to assist. Hats off to all the volunteers who have helped with running the election including manning polling locations and counting ballots. It is a back-breaking job and to the faithful who are always ready to help - Thank You! We have new appreciation for the job you do!
