Shelbyville Teams Qualify for State Debate Meet

February 7, 2022 - On Saturday, February 5, Cross-Examination Debate students in U.I.L. District 23AA competed at Center High School. Avery Hamilton and Lanie Bass placed 3rd, Eli Taylor and Hallie Merriman placed 2nd and qualified for the state competition, and Ava Silva and Aubree Camp placed 1st and also qualified for state. Ava Silva was awarded the high speaker award of the tournament. Eli, Hallie, Aubree, and Ava will compete at the state competition held at the University of Texas in Austin on March 14-15.

“UIL debate competition motivates students and provides them with practical application for the skills they are developing,” said Jana Riggins, UIL State Debate Director. “This year’s debate topic prompted students to research and form their own thoughts and opinions on the real-world issue our government is challenged with: Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase its protection of water resources in the United States.”
