Timpson HS Band Earns Straight First Division Ratings

May 4, 2015 - On Wednesday, April 29 the Timpson High School Band performed at the UIL Region 21 Concert and Sightreading Contest held at Troup High School. The band received first division superior ratings from all six judges at the contest.

The band had a super performance on stage and received many great comments from the judges. Some of those comments were: “This band is technically proficient and capable of performing this program that is TWO LEVELS above their class! BRAVO!!”, “A very musical performance! Good use of dynamics!”, “Great individual sounds in all sections and a very nice ensemble sound.”, “Band plays well and is very prepared on their literature!”, “Very nice march style! Very clean!”, “Very musical! So well managed! Nicely shaped!”, “You have a good sense of pitch, balance, etc. Good for you!”

Each band competing at UIL is required to perform music that is on the Prescribed Music List. Class 2A high school bands, such as Timpson, are required to play music from the Grade 1 list, which is the same list that class C middle schools use. Some bands elect to perform more difficult music that is on the list for classifications larger than their own. Performing more difficult musical selections provides many benefits to student musicians, especially those with plans to continue their musical careers beyond high school into college and university band programs.

Last year the Timpson band earned first division ratings performing music that is required of 3A high school bands. The band was ranked 7th in the state in the TMEA Honor Band competition in July 2014 based on that performance.

This year the THS Band took on the challenge of performing a program that is required of 4A high school bands. The only Region 21 2A Bands that played this level of music this year are from right here in Shelby County (Timpson and Shelbyville!). Earning unanimous superior ratings from all judges on a program of this difficulty is quite an accomplishment! Congratulations, band, on a job well done!

The Timpson High School Band is comprised of students in grades 7-12, with over half being in 7th and 8th grade. TISD is proud of the bands’ accomplishments and look forward to what is in store for this young group! The Timpson Band is directed by Rhonda Cates and Kasi Trent.
