Elementary Robotics News - Recently the Timpson Bearbots participated in the Region 7 Education Service Center’s Primary Robotics Celebration. The challenge this year was for students to build a business with games and/or toys. Their first job was to complete a survey where they asked peers, community members, and parents for suggestions on a business idea. They had to plan, design, and program a robot to help with their business or actually be a product that they would sell. Part of their project was journaling and creating a notebook to display with their showcase. Their notebooks included their business plan, survey, journal entries, budget, and coding blocks.
The Dallas Cowbots created a “Tacklebot” that would help teach kids how to tackle and play football. They created a football field, small shop area, and packaging label for their product. In their code they added a sound block so the “Tacklebot” would say “hut hut” before moving across the football field to tackle the players. The Dallas Cowbots team included Shane Mikesh, Ira Land, and Brecken Behrens.
The Glittery Unibots created a waiterbot for their Glitter Grande restaurant and candy shop. They used a motion sensor for their robot so that when someone waved for help it would stop. They also used a sound block in their code where their robot after stopping would ask “how may I help you?” Their candy shop included candy containers and their restaurant included tables and chairs. The Glittery Unibots team included Brylee Tipton, Bailee Furnace, and Mattyson Barbee.
The Ultimate Robotic Coders created a game board with obstacles to go through. Their game board included a start, finish, a ball pit, rocket ship, a Zinga toy, a tunnel, a coloring coordinating station, and other obstacles. Their robot was a “dragon t-rex car” that pulled the gamers across the game board. Their selling point was that “kids of all ages would want to come play because it was kinda amazing.” The Ultimate Robotic Coders team included Brooklynn Nettles, Kamryn Fontenot, and Korbyn Fontenot.
The Dream Team created PBJ’s Slime Shop. They presented a commercial where they asked, “Do you like to make slime but hate the mess?” “Come to PBJ’s Slime Shop to have fun with NO MESS to clean up.” Their robot had a mop that would rotate to clean up liquid and an extendable side arm that would scrape the slime off the floor. They had a “Make and Take Slime” area in their store along with a “New Product” display. Their new product was cotton candy slime. The Dream Team included Poppy Tyler, Joleigh Jourden, and Bianca McCollister.
After the showcase all the students were able to create their own miniature golf putt-putt course using recyclable materials. They were then able to play other students’ golf courses and keep track using their scorecard.
