Shed those extra pounds and become a healthier version of yourself with the Get Up Get Fit program in Shelby County. The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service office proudly presents a 12-week weight management and fitness program designed to guide you towards a healthier, more vibrant life.

Join us for a two-part program in collaboration with Lighten Up East Texas. The initial weigh-in for participants will take place from January 24th to 31st, 2024, between 8:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. at the Shelby County Extension office, located at 266 Nacogdoches Street, Center, Texas.

Participation in Lighten Up East Texas requires a weigh-in by January 31st, and there is no fee for this program.

The program officially kicks off on Tuesday, February 6, 2024, at 5:30 pm at the Shelby County Extension office.

Winners of the 12-week challenge will be determined by the percentage of bodyweight lost during the competition, not by the number of pounds lost. Participants will have bi-weekly weigh-ins to track their progress (weights kept confidential). The final weigh-in at the Extension office is scheduled for the week of April 29, 2024, with the last day to weigh out for the Lighten Up East Texas program on May 3, 2024. Shelby County local winners will receive prizes for 1st to 3rd places, respectively, and will be honored at a celebration event on May 7, 2024, at 5:30 p.m.

Feleshia Thompson, Shelby County Extension Agent, mentions that the Get Up Get Fit program will offer:

• A weekly Walk and Talk fitness program.
• Weekly healthy cooking nutrition classes/Food Demos
• Guest speakers covering various topics.
• Weekly door prizes

Participants are encouraged to enter an additional weight loss challenge for all of East Texas, titled Lighten Up East Texas. Eligible participants in this free contest stand a chance to win grand prizes, including $5,000 in cash for the top participant with the highest percentage of weight loss and other rewards for those losing at least 5% in weight. Thompson emphasizes that the program is designed to be both enjoyable and effective. "This is a challenge designed to be fun," she says, "but at the same time help people achieve their weightloss goals, and although there are prizes, everyone who reaches a healthier weight is a winner."
