VFW Announces Youth Essay Winners

November 14, 2016 - Shelby County Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8904, Center, Texas is proud to announce the winners of this year’s VFW youth essay programs Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen.

Co-winners of the Voice of Democracy program are both seniors at Joaquin High School, Reagan P. Hovey and Darby D. Hughes. Each wrote and recorded an essay on the theme “My Responsibility To America”.

Awards were presented at the Joaquin ISD Veterans Day program that was held Friday, November 11th. Along with a framed certificate the Voice of Democracy winners received a $100 check from the post and the Patriot’s Pen winner was presented with a $50 check.

Each will now compete at the District level with the district winner competing at the state level and then on to the national competition. The National Voice of Democracy winner receives a $30,000 scholarship and the National Patriot’s Pen winner is awarded $5,000 cash.

Our post and auxiliary wish each the best in the upcoming competition. The district results should be known by the end of the month.
