VFW Post 8904 Announces Youth Essay Winners

November 16, 2017 - Shelby County Memorial VFW Post 8904 and the Auxiliary are proud to announce the winners of this year’s youth essay contests.

Patriot’s Pen – open to all students in grades 6-8.  Essay of 300-400 words on this year’s theme: “America’s Gift to My Generation”.
First Place:  Joaquin 8th grade student Cullen Freeman (shown in photo with mother, Amanda).  Cullen received a framed certificate, Patriot’s Pen Medal and a check for $50.00.

Voice of Democracy – open to all students in grades 9-12.  Oral essay of 3-5 minutes on this year’s theme:  “American History: Our Hope for the Future”.
Co First Place Winners:  Joaquin HS Senior Abigail Hooper and Joaquin HS Senior Matthew Silvey.  Both received a framed certificate, Voice of Democracy Medal and a check for $100.00.

Each will now compete at the district level with results being announced within the next 7-10 days.
