VFW Post 8904 Observes POW/MIA Recognition Day

September 18, 2020 - VFW Post 8904 Veterans and Auxiliary members observed POW/MIA Recognition Day September 18, 2020.

Although the program was somewhat overshadowed by the sounds of construction in progress on the Center square, the VFW Post 8904 members pushed through and honored those who were held captive and returned, as well as those who remain missing.

Larry Hume, Post Quartermaster, opened the program and led the gathering in a prayer. This was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance to our nation's flag.

"We salute the men and women who served to keep America free, and in doing so they sacrifieced their own lives," said Hume. "As we remember the families of the missing, we continue to hope and pray that they will one day return."

Hume stated their are currently over 83,000 American listed as missing in action and unaccounted for going back to World War II. Shelby County has 36 of her citizens killed as prisoners of war, 32 from World War II, three from Korea and one from World War I who Hume says has been missing in action for over 102 years.

A memorial wreath was hung by Kenneth Ramsey, VFW Post member, from the Shelby County Veterans Memorial.

The VFW then lowered the flags and replaced the POW/MIA flag with a new one. Taps was then played as presented by Gene Hutto, VFW Post member.
