May 11, 2015 - Victory in Europe was recognized at the Shelby County Historic Courthouse Friday, May 8, 2015 with members of VFW Post 8904 and community members present for the event. Gene Hutto, Post Chaplain, led the opening prayer and Larry Hume, Post Quartermaster, led the ceremony.

"70 years ago in 1945 the war in Europe ended. Today, May 8th both the American and British people gather to remember and the United States suffered over 213,000 casualties in Europe," said Hume. "Today we remember them all and also those who served during that time and returned home."

Hume stated of the 16 million men and women who served in World War II there are less than 1.25 million alive today with the average age being 90, "They too once were young and in that youth, as I always say at funerals, they truly saved the world. Unfortunately, that world may need saving again and unfortunately again I'm not sure we've got the youth that can step up to the plate and do it as they did."

As Hume continued he elaborated on the end of the war in Europe and the continuation of the war in the Pacific where over 73,000 Americans remain missing in action and unaccounted for from World War II. They too have not been forgotten and their families are prayed for added Hume.

Newton Johnson, Senior Vice Commander, proceeded to hang the memorial wreath from the Shelby County Veterans Memorial and John Piersol, VFW member, presented TAPS.
