February 24, 2016 - We had some very special guest tour the museum this week. The First Baptist Church of Hemphill pre-school students stop by for a tour of the museum. They enjoyed playing the games in the classroom and getting to see the shuttle replica. Each student received an 8x10 poster of the seven astronauts that was on Mission STS-107, a JSC Roundup magazine and pictures to color.
JSC Roundup Winter 2016 cover is of Scott Kelly, a U.S. astronaut for NASA that is making history. Kelly and cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko launched to the space station on March 27, 2015 and are currently aboard the International Space Station for a one-year mission. The goal of the mission is to understand how the human body reacts and adapts to the harsh environment of space. Data from the expedition will be used to reduce risks to the health of crewmembers as NASA prepares to advance space travel beyond low Earth orbit. Kelly was a Flight Engineer for increments 43 and 44, and the International Space Station Commander for increments 45 and 46. Kelly is set to return on Tuesday, March 1. Kelly will return to Houston’s Ellington Field on Wednesday, March 2. After landing, Kelly will hold the record among U.S. astronauts for cumulative time in space, with 520 days. Kelly’s twin brother, former NASA astronaut Mark Kelly, participated in parallel twin studies on Earth to help scientists compare the effects on the body and mind in space.
