December 16, 2020 - The Alcohol and Drug Council has added three new programs with the goal to provide prevention services to youth and adults on alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.
October 6, 2020 - While many events have been canceled due to COVID-19, Red Ribbon Week is still on. Each year the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council of Deep East Texas promotes Red Ribbon Week to raise awareness concerning the risks of drug and alcohol use. Red Ribbon Week is the largest drug-abuse prevention campaign in the nation. The theme for this year is “Mask Out Drugs” and the dates are October 23-31.
July 8, 2020 - We are now living in a new world. Wearing masks at work and while grocery shopping. No more handshakes, just a wave from six feet away. Putting on make-up and fixing your hair, yet staying in your pajamas for a Zoom meeting. Drive through doctor visits and testing. Although the way we do things have changed, what hasn’t changed is the reason why we do things.
November 14, 2019 - The use of vapes and e-cigarettes has increased rapidly into today’s culture. Over the past few years, the use of vaping and e-cigarette devices has increased so much that research hospitals and universities have taken notice and their findings are now coming out to help separate the facts from fiction concerning this phenomenon. Is vaping and e-cigarettes a safe alternative to smoking the traditional combustible cigarette? Is it an effective device for smoking cessation? Here is what we now know.
August 22, 2019 - School is back in session and our children are meeting new teachers, finding new classrooms, and making new friends. This is an exciting part of the year with so many new things and endless possibilities. With so many “new” things, it is also important for our children to understand that not every “new” thing is good. There are some “new” things that we must teach our children to watch out for and smoking surely tops the list.
May 14, 2019 - National Prevention Week is an effort to bring communities together to raise public awareness concerning substance abuse and mental health issues. This national observance, which is sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), will be May 12-18, 2019. This is the perfect time for everyone to come together and rally around prevention. Community agencies and coalitions are using this time to educate the public about the importance of preventing substance abuse and mental disorders BEFORE they occur.
February 28, 2019 - During the 1940’s Thailand and Malaysia set out to exterminate a specific type of tree known as the Kratom tree. Seventy years later the native tree of southeast Asia is still thriving. Why has such an effort been placed on the annihilation this one tree? It is because of the devastating effects it has on those who chew, ingest, or smoke the leaves of the Kratom tree.
