New Law: 21 Is the New Minimum

August 22, 2019 - School is back in session and our children are meeting new teachers, finding new classrooms, and making new friends. This is an exciting part of the year with so many new things and endless possibilities. With so many “new” things, it is also important for our children to understand that not every “new” thing is good. There are some “new” things that we must teach our children to watch out for and smoking surely tops the list.

National Prevention Week Raises Awareness of Substance Abuse, Mental Health Issues

May 14, 2019 - National Prevention Week is an effort to bring communities together to raise public awareness concerning substance abuse and mental health issues. This national observance, which is sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), will be May 12-18, 2019. This is the perfect time for everyone to come together and rally around prevention. Community agencies and coalitions are using this time to educate the public about the importance of preventing substance abuse and mental disorders BEFORE they occur.

Kratom: A New Addiction

February 28, 2019 - During the 1940’s Thailand and Malaysia set out to exterminate a specific type of tree known as the Kratom tree. Seventy years later the native tree of southeast Asia is still thriving. Why has such an effort been placed on the annihilation this one tree? It is because of the devastating effects it has on those who chew, ingest, or smoke the leaves of the Kratom tree.

The Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council of Deep East Texas (ADAC) is here to help guide and support anyone struggling with substance abuse. ADAC Promotes Recovery Month, National Red Ribbon Week

September 17, 2018 - Recovery Month promotes the societal benefits of prevention, treatment, and recovery for mental and substance use disorders and spreads the positive message that behavioral health is essential to overall health, that prevention works, treatment is effective and people can and do recover.

September is National Recovery Month

August 31, 2018 - Come join your fellow community members in celebrating everyone in recovery on September 29, 2018 in Kiwanis Park from 10:00am to 2:00pm. There will be free lunch provided to all who attend our celebration of recovery. Activities such as pony rides, a rock wall, face painting and much more will also be available free of charge. This year’s theme is “Join the Voices for Recovery: Invest in Health, Home, Purpose, and Community.” Recovery from addiction or mental illness is a tremendous accomplishment worthy of celebration by everyone.

Drug Overdose Deaths Increasing; What About Alcohol Related Deaths?

August 23, 2018 - We see on the television and read in the newspaper how drug overdose deaths are increasing at a rapid rate. Opioid and Fentanyl are being discussed throughout the nation in businesses and homes. With great concern, we talk about the ease of encountering fentanyl and how different illicit drugs are being laced with all types of chemicals. However, according to the Center of Disease Control, the number of opioid related overdose deaths in 2016 were about 42,000, but the number of alcohol related deaths per year is about 88,000.

January 11, 2018 - On October 26th, 2017, President Trump declared the opioid epidemic as a public health emergency. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 140 Americans die every day from an opioid overdose. Now, more than ever, it is important to know the facts concerning the misuse of drugs and alcohol.

More than half of high school seniors across the country report using alcohol, and around 15 percent report using illegal drugs sometime in the past year, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse.
