August 15, 2018 - The burn ban for Shelby County has been lifted. The Commissioners Court would like to stress that anyone burning should still be cautious. The northwest part of the county is still fairly dry so please be safe and careful when burning.
December 18, 2017 - Shelby County is currently not under a burn-ban. I have talked with the Texas Forest Service and they noted that our numbers do not constitute a ban on burning.
However, I would like to caution anyone who is planning to burn brush, trash, etc. to please use caution. Consider the strength of the wind when burning and do not leave any open flame unattended.
July 21, 2017 - Notice is hereby given that a Special meeting of the Governing body of the Shelby County Commissioners’ Court will be held on the 24th day of July, 2017 at 9:30 a.m. in the Courtroom of the Shelby County Courthouse at 200 San Augustine Street, Center, Shelby County, Texas to deliberate and consider action on the following items:
1. Approve and pay monthly expenses.
2. Public discussion on agenda items.
3. Open and possibly accept a bid for asphalt zipper for R&B Precinct 3 & 4.
April 28, 2017 - The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). NFIP works closely with many private insurance agencies to offer flood insurance to homeowners, renters, and business owners. To qualify for flood insurance these individuals must live in a community that has joined NFIP.
March 17, 2016 - To All To Whom These Presents Shall Come:
I, Greg Abbott, Governor of Texas, issued an Emergency Disaster Proclamation on March 14, 2016, certifying that the severe weather and flooding event that began on March 7, 2016, has caused a disaster in many Texas counties. Those same conditions continue to exist in these and other counties in Texas.
March 11, 2016 - As previously reported, Shelby County Judge Allison Harbison has issued a mandatory evacuation for all residents living on the Sabine River and Toledo Bend Lake within Shelby County. This mandatory evacuation is to ensure the safety of residents that may be affected by flooding caused by recent heavy rainfalls and is also meant to help protect first responders who may have to perform extreme measures to rescue individuals who choose not to evacuate.
March 9, 2016 - I would want to urge everyone who lives in low lying areas, especially, the lake areas and near the Sabine River to be cautious and if possible evacuate until the rain and flooding ends. We are not calling for a mandatory evacuation at this time but a voluntary one.
August 24, 2015 AUSTIN, Texas - If you are among the thousands of Texans who filed insurance claims for damage related to the May 4 to June 22 storms, you may be eligible for additional state-federal assistance. The key is to register with FEMA before the Aug. 27 deadline. Filing a claim under FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program is different than registering for a FEMA disaster assistance grant.
August 7, 2015 - Shelby County Judge, Allison Harbison, would like to urge everyone to use caution when burning outdoors.
Commissioners Court will consider adopting a 90 day burn ban on Monday, August 10th, however, until then Judge Harbison asks everyone to use good judgement when burning trash or brush.
Judge Harbison talked with the Texas Forest Service and if you feel you must burn outdoors, they ask that you call the proper authorities at the first hint of danger.
July 24, 2015 - Shelby County Judge Allison Harbison would like to inform the public that a Disaster Survivor Assistance (DSA) crew with FEMA will be in Shelby County next week to register individuals for assistance. Please do not hesitate to contact the County Judge's office if you haven’t already. It is not too late to apply for assistance. The crew will be going door to door in neighborhoods that were affected. They will have ID badges and will introduce themselves as FEMA representatives.
