After 105 Years, Another Generation Takes Over at the Legendary King Nursery

January 8, 2021 - In the small town of Tenaha, Texas, any news is big news. This year will prove particularly newsworthy for Tenaha’s own historic King’s Nursery as 4th generation owner and manager Dr. Andrew King returns home to take over the family business.

Andrew and his family return from College Station where he earned a PhD in Horticulture from Texas A&M University and where he served on the faculty in the Department of Horticultural Sciences for the past five years.

Grant to speak on Pines, Pawpaws, Pocket Prairies in Tyler

January 15, 2020 - This Friday, January 17, 2020, Greg Grant, Smith County Horticulturist for the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will be at the Tyler Public Library (201 South College Avenue, Tyler, TX 75702) from 11:30-1:30 yapping "Pines, Pawpaws, and Pocket Prairies” and telling about his personal experiences developing and maintaining an ecosystem for birds, bees, and butterflies on his rural farmstead.  

Smith County AgriLife to feature Landscaping Lecture, Heirloom Quilt Show

July 22, 2019 Tyler – Greg Grant, Smith County Extension Horticulturist, will present “Stitching an Heirloom Garden… Learning Landscaping from my Grannies’ Old Quilts” on Saturday, August 24 at Harvey Hall, 2000 W. Front St in Tyler, TX.

Along with the lecture, which also features Jo Helen McGee on “Quilt Preservation,” there will be an heirloom quilt show featuring the inaugural showing of Greg’s extensive heirloom family quilt collection.

Texas A&M AgriLife to Host Private Spring Garden Tour

January 30 2019 Tyler, Texas - The Smith County A&M AgriLife Extension Office will be hosting a private landscape tour Tuesday, March 26, 2019 from 9:00- 12:00 PM in the beautiful garden of Guy and Joan Pyron located in the Azalea District, 212 W. Dobbs St. Tyler, Texas. 

The personally guided tour will be led by current Smith County horticulturist, Greg Grant, and retired Smith County horticulturist, Keith Hansen. Both are professional horticulturists and garden writers with master’s degrees in horticulture and many years of gardening experience.

Texas A&M Agrilife Extension Service to Host East Texas Turfgrass Conference

January 29, 2019 - If you’d like answers, solutions, and the tools available for a good lawn, plan on attending the annual Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service East Texas Turfgrass Conference Thursday, February 7 in Overton. The program is $35, which includes lunch, and will be held at the Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center, 1710 Farm-to-Market Road 3053, Overton, Texas 75684. Registration and payment is at the door.

Grant, Kridler to Speak at Smith County Master Gardeners’ Bulb Sale

October 5, 2018 - The Smith County Master Gardeners will be hosting their ever-popular “From Bulbs to Blooms” conference and sale Saturday, October 13, 2018, at Harvey Hall (2000 W. Front St., Tyler, Texas, directly across from the Tyler Rose Garden). Registration is at 8:30 am. East Texas Bulb farmer Keith Kridler will speak at 9:00 am on “Proven Spring Bulbs for Texas” and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service horticulturist Greg Grant’s will speak on “Earth-Kind Summer and Fall Bulbs at 10:00 am. The bulb sale begins at 11:30 am and ends at 1:30 pm.

Texas Members to Host Southern Garden History Society Program in Historic Nacogdoches

September 10, 2018 - The Southern Garden History Society, along with SFA Gardens, Friends of Historic Nacogdoches, Inc, and the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will present 300 Years of Plants on the Move in Texas in historic Nacogdoches, Texas Friday and Saturday, October 5 and 6, 2018 to celebrate Texas’ Tricentennial in gardening with tours, lectures, a book signing, and a reception. As a special treat, attendees will be able to attend the famous annual fall plant sale at the SFA Gardens’ Pineywoods Native Plant Center.
