Across the Preacher’s Desk: Living God’s Kind of Life

October 21, 2021 - Sometimes, the best thing we can do is just get out of the way, not make any comment and let the Word of God do all the talking. The dictionary defines obedience as “compliance with an order, request, or law or submission to another's authority.”

That said, here is what Jesus said in the Sermon on The Mount in Matthew 7:21; “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.” (KJV)

Here is that same passage in some other translations:

Across the Preacher’s Desk: It’s Not A Spectator Sport!

October 14, 2021 - One of the things we have lost sight of over the course of the “pandemic” or as I often refer to it “the present distress” is the fact that Worship is not a spectator sport.  I have the utmost admiration and gratitude for the lengths so many have gone to in their effort to keep the Worship of God vital through “virtual church services” and the many different ways technology has enabled people to “attend” Worship from home.  Yet, the fact remains, no virtual service can ever take the place of Worshipping God with other Christians.

Across the Preacher’s Desk…Love One Another

October 8, 2021 - The cross on Calvary’s hill was already casting its shadow on Jesus when he told the disciples to “love one another” (John 13:34) and then He said, “by this shall all men know that ye are my disciples if ye have love one to another” (John 13:35)

Sadly, of all the commands Jesus gave, this is more talked about and less obeyed than any of them.   If we mean anything when we profess to have love for our brothers and sisters in Christ, it should show itself in our dealings with them.

Across the Preacher's Desk: Tomorrow

September 30, 2021 - James would write these very poignant words in Jam s 4:14, "Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor, that appeareth for a little time and then vanisheth away" The most dangerous word in human speech os "tomorrow". In fact, if you want to really make God [laugh, teN what you are going to do tomorrow.

Across the Preacher’s Desk: What Will You Do With Jesus?

September 17, 2021 - In Matthew chapter 27, Pilate gave the people the choice of releasing a hardened criminal named Barabbas or Jesus. Whipped into a frenzy by their leaders, the people chose Barabbas. Then Pilate asked the question, “What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ?” The people shouted, “Let him be crucified”

That question is a universal question. It is a question asked by all races and all classes of people. The truth is, once a man or woman has heard about Jesus and learned the truth about Jesus, they can never be the same.

Across the preacher’s desk: The Grasshopper

September 2, 2021 - When Moses sent the twelve spies on their reconnaissance mission to the Promised Land, 10 came back with a negative report. They said that they saw giants in the land and they were in their own sight as “grasshoppers”. They viewed their ability to take the land only in their own human strength. It was Joshua and Caleb who realized that taking the land depended not on their human strength but the power of God.

Across the Preacher's Desk - Jesus Never Changes!

August 26, 2021 - We live in a changing world, and nothing emphasizes that better than recent events on the world stage. Yet, many of us have seen great changes in our life in transportation, the performance of household tasks, medicine, and communications. To some of us who remember rotary dial phones and party lines, the internet and cell phones are things we never imagined when we were younger.
