Texas Game Warden Memorial is Moving to New Home

After nine years of legislative hurdles, the State Preservation Board approved the memorial’s move to the Texas State Capitol

December 22, 2021 - Since 2012, the Game Warden Peace Officer’s Association has been working to relocate the memorial from the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center in Athens to the grounds of the Texas State Capitol. The life-size bronze figure of a Texas Game Warden stands to honor the wardens that lost their lives in the line of duty and serves as a reminder of the enduring legacy of the Texas Game Wardens.

December 9, 2021 — Texas State Parks and the Texas Historical Commission are hosting their biggest holiday season yet with more than 80 unique holiday events happening across the state. TPWD Announces Grants to Enhance Angler Access, Fish Habitat

November 15, 2021 – The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s (TPWD) Inland Fisheries Division has selected 21 projects to be supported by the new Habitat and Angler Access Program (HAAP). The program, which launched in June 2021, is primarily funded by the purchase of freshwater fishing licenses.

Biologists Ask the Public to Report Rabbit Mortality Events

November 10, 2021 — In early 2020, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) received test results confirming that Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease (RHDV) was found in several species of wild rabbits in Texas. Since April of this year, TPWD, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) have not confirmed any new cases in wild rabbit populations in the state.

Biologists Say White-Tailed Deer Population Looks Strong Ahead of Archery-Only Season Opener

September 17, 2021 – Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) biologists say that 2021-22 is expected to be a white-tailed deer season for the books. Last year, the overall white-tailed deer population was estimated to be 5.4 million deer. While that estimate is down from the previous two years, TPWD biologists say that if fawn recruitment predictions hold true this season, coupled with good carryover of deer from last hunting season, hunters and landowners can expect to see an increase in the overall statewide white-tailed deer population.

Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission Special Meeting on CWD Set for Sept. 15

August 27, 2021 — The Texas Parks and Wildlife (TPW) Commission will hold a special meeting on proposed rules related to Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD). Earlier this year, the discovery of CWD in six deer breeding facilities necessitated the filing of emergency rules in an attempt to stop the further spread of this disease. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) staff has been working with Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) and numerous stakeholder groups to develop rules that will ultimately replace the emergency rules.

TPWD Community Outdoor Outreach Program Grant Accepting Applications

August 20, 2021 – The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) is now accepting grant applications for the Community Outdoor Outreach Program (CO-OP). CO-OP provides grant funding to tax-exempt organizations for programs that engage under-represented populations in TPWD mission-oriented activities. These grants support community-based conservation and outdoor recreation activities such as archery, fishing, camping, hiking, hunting, nature education and more.
