Texas A&M Forest Service Encourages Building a Go-kit for Wildfires, Disasters

April 20, 2022 — We can’t control when disasters strike, but we can make sure we are prepared. During the Emergency Preparation Supplies Sales Tax Holiday this weekend, Texans can pick up essential items for their evacuation go-kits tax-free.

“When disasters such as wildfires, hurricanes, winter storms and tornados arise requiring you to leave your home, being prepared ahead of time can save precious time and help keep your family safe during an emergency,” said Karen Stafford, Texas A&M Forest Service Wildfire Prevention Coordinator.

Wildfire Activity Expected This Weekend as Critical Fire Weather

Dry vegetation is present across large portions of the state

April 8, 2022 — Wildfire activity is expected to increase through the weekend as more areas across the state will be characterized by dry to extremely dry surface fuels.

There is high potential for large, significant wildfires to occur on Saturday in the Western/Eastern Hill Country, Southern Plains, High Plains and South Texas regions. Extremely dry vegetation across these regions will support increased potential for large wildfires when exposed to critical fire weather.

As Wildfire Potential Increases, Practice Fire Safety This Holiday Season

December 21, 2021 - Critical fire weather is forecast through Sunday for portions of North and West Texas with Friday holding the most potential for wildfire activity, particularly in the panhandle.

Texas A&M Forest Service has prepositioned resources across the area including three single engine air tankers and an air attack platform in Childress, and two large airtankers and an aerial supervision module in Abilene to support suppression efforts as requested.

Firefighters Continue to Contain Large Wildfires from Wednesday’s Southern Plains Wildfire Outbreak

December 17, 2021 — A Southern Plains Wildfire Outbreak occurred across the panhandle of Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas on Wednesday. This weather phenomena is characterized by critical to extreme fire weather combined with critically dry fuels, above normal temperatures, high wind speeds and significant wildfire activity.

Prevent the Spread of Tree Pests, Diseases by Not Moving Firewood

November 18, 2021 – Texas A&M Forest Service urges all Texans, and especially outdoor enthusiasts, to help reduce the spread of oak wilt and wood borers by taking preventative measures and being cautious when collecting and purchasing firewood. As Texans travel for hunting or camping trips, they may unknowingly be bringing deadly, invasive pests and diseases along through firewood.
