July 27, 2017 - Mark your calendars for this year's sales tax holiday on August 11th-13th.  The law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks which are priced under $100 from sales and use taxes.

The law also allows layaway purchases of these items to qualify for the sales tax exemption.  All sellers in the state are required to honor the sales tax holiday, so it's a great time to get prepared for the upcoming school year while saving some money in the process.

July 19, 2017 - The North Korean Army began an offensive on June 25, 1950, to invade South Korea that resulted in the capture of the republic’s capital, Seoul, within four days. The United States, the United Kingdom and other members of the United Nations moved to actively defend South Korea – an effort that would last until July 27, 1953, when negotiations concluded and fighting finally ended.

FSA County Committee Nomination Period Began June 15; Ends Aug. 1

July 26, 2017 - Nacogdoches-Angelina-Trinity-San Augustine-Shelby County USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) Executive Director Lance Jacobs, announced that the nomination period for local FSA county committees began on Thursday, June 15, 2017.

"County Committees are unique to FSA and allow producers to have a voice on federal farm program implementation at the local level," said Jacobs.

Texas Health Officials Find Probable Zika Infection

July 26, 2017 Texas - The Texas Department of State Health Services and Hidalgo County Health and Human Services have determined a Hidalgo County resident who previously had a Zika infection was most likely infected in Texas. Because the individual has not recently traveled outside the area or had any other risk factors, the infection was probably transmitted by a mosquito bite in South Texas sometime in the last few months. Laboratory testing shows the individual is no longer at risk of spreading the virus to mosquitoes.

Commissioner Morath Announced Public Comment Period for ESSA State Plan to Begin July 31

July 25, 2017 Austin – Commissioner of Education Mike Morath announced today that a public comment period for the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) consolidated state plan will begin Monday, July 31. The ESSA consolidated state plan is scheduled to be submitted by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) to the U.S. Department of Education later this year.

Rep. Chris Paddie Capitol Update: Governor Convenes 85th Legislature Special Session

July 21, 2017 - This week was the beginning of the first called, or special, session of the 85th legislature. The Texas Constitution requires that the Legislature meet for 140 days every odd numbered year, but the governor has the authority to call 30-day special sessions for specific policy initiatives determined by the governor.
