April 15, 2020 - In an attempt to organize the changes happening due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19), Shelby County Today will keep all notices, closures, and cancellations organized on this page.

Deadline to pay property taxes without a penalty is Monday, February 1, 2016.

Shelby County Commissioners Issue Burn Ban

Jury Cancellation for 273rd Judicial District Court for Oct. 20

October 14, 2025 - The jury that has been summoned for Monday, October 20, 2025 for the 273rd District Court Honorable James A. Payne, Jr. presiding has been cancelled due to the scheduled cases being resolved or passed.

Anyone receiving a summons for that day is released from jury service until they receive a future summons.

FM 147 Crash Claims Life of Driver Involved

October 13, 2025 - Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Troopers are investigating a one-vehicle fatality crash on state Highway 147, south of Center, that occurred Saturday, October 11, 2025.

The preliminary crash investigation indicates that at approximately 1:30am, a 2013 Infiniti JX35 was traveling south. It is reported that the driver of the Infiniti left the road to the left and struck a tree.

The driver of the Infiniti identified as Candy Nestle, 61, of Center, was pronounced deceased on scene by a Shelby County Justice of the Peace.

Center FD, Timpson VFD Fight CR 1465 House Fire

October 10, 2025 - Center Fire Department firefighters responded to a house fire on CR 1465 Thursday, October 9, 2025, and when they arrived the mobile home was fully involved in the fire.

Fourth Suspect in Custody for Shooting Incident on CR 2235 (Update)

October 10, 2025 - Alijah Ja'von Nicholson, 19, was arrested by the Angelina County Sheriff’s Department officers on Thursday, October 9, 2025.

Risinger, Belrose Enter Guilty Pleas; Receive 30, 50-Year Sentences

October 9, 2025 - Judge Jim Payne heard two pleas of guilty today, October 9, 2025 in the 273rd District Court of Shelby County, Texas. The State was represented by Assistant District Attorney Stephanie Stroud and the defendants were represented by local attorney, Stephen Shires.

Shelby County Remains Under Burn Ban

October 8, 2025 - The Shelby County Commissioners met Wednesday, October 8, 2025, and ratified the burn ban which keeps it in place until further notice.

Shelby County remains under a burn ban.
