August 11, 2022 - Center Fire Chief Keith Byndom wants city of Center residents to be aware the city of Center is part of the countywide burn ban.
Those who violate the burn ban are subject to potential penalties and as a result of citations may have to face the municipal court judge or justice of the peace.

August 10, 2022 - The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office is investigating three separate thefts that have occurred recently.
Between 12-midnight and 2pm on August 5, 2022, a 2010 single cab red Ford pickup was stolen from a residence on US Hwy 84 East in Tenaha.

Between 8pm on August 5, 2022 and 9am on August 6, 2022, a black 14-foot Parker single axle utility trailer with a drop down ramp was stolen from a property on FM 2608 in Center.
Between mid-afternoon on August 5, 2022 and the early evening on August 6, 2022, a black 16-foot Performance low boy bumper pull trailer was stolen from a property on FM 138 in Center.
The SCSO is seeking the assistance of the public in locating the Ford truck and two trailers. If you have any information, you are asked to contact SCSO Lieutenant Investigator DJ Dickerson at 936.572.0255.
August 5, 2022 - With schools starting back in early August, parents are preparing their students for the new year!

August 8, 2022 - The opening week of August picked up slightly in call volume for the Joaquin Volunteer Fire Department when compared to the past two weeks. Here’s a summary of what transpired.
Starting with Monday, August 1st, the JVFD was dispatched to a call about a 7-year-old with a puncture wound in their abdomen. Members of the EMR team were able to administer medical attention before Allegiance EMS arrived to transport the patient to the baseball field where a landing zone was set up.
Next on Thursday, August 4th at around 7:30pm reports came in of a power line down on Highway 84 past Crystal Lake, which resulted in a brush fire. The Joaquin VFD responded with two brush trucks and a tanker truck for added water supply, and fought the fire for the better part of two hours. Once it seemed that the fire was subdued all units cleared the scene.
The Joaquin VFD would be dispatched to the same location two more times on Friday and once on Saturday to put out the fire after it rekindled.

August 6, 2022 - The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a burglary that occurred between 8:30 p.m. on August 5, 2022 and 8:30 a.m. August 6, 2022.
Unknown subjects entered Watson & Sons Funeral Home on Highway 7 East in Center and ransacked their facility. Subjects entered each office in the building and went through all items and caused damage to two vehicles on the property. Subjects took multiple items from each office that was entered.

August 6, 2022 - The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a burglary of storage units that was reported August 5, 2022.
An unknown subject(s) entered the Stateline Self Storage on Hwy 84 East and cut the locks on 20 storage units. Countless items were taken from the units.
We are requesting assistance from the public regarding this burglary. If you have any information on the subjects involved in this case, or if you saw anything suspicious, you are urged to contact Investigator David Haley at 936.598.5601 or 936.572.0667.
August 5, 2022 - Shelby County Sheriff Kevin W. Windham reports the recovery of a Yamaha dirt bike that was stolen off CR 1012 in Center on July 25, 2022. Investigator Chad Hooper followed leads and successfully recovered the bike on August 1, and returned it to the owner on August 2.
No further information will be released due to juvenile involvement in this case.

August 5, 2022 - The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s assistance in locating to subjects involved in an ATM burglary. At approximately 4:30 a.m. on August 5, 2022, two black males approached the ATM located at American State Bank on the Haslam strip in Joaquin. The subjects attempted to break into the machine. The subjects were driving a white Dodge Avenger with a black racing stripe on the hood and black pin striping on the sides. The vehicle has Texas plates.

Update at 4:45pm: DETEC was able to partner with SWEPCO and swap the majority of the energy load to their circuit. This move restored power to all, but approximately 500 meters in the Paxton area. Crews are now working to reroute the Paxton area. We appreciate your patience.
August 4, 2022 - At 3:30pm, Deep East Texas Electric updated the large outage in the Tenaha area is expected to last approximately 5 hours. Unfortunately, crews have identified the transformer within Tenaha substation as the cause of the outage. Crews are in route with our mobile substation to power the station until the transformer is changed out. This process will take approximately 5 hours to complete. If you are in need of power for medical reasons, please seek an alternate location. You do not need to report your outage during this time.
The outage is impacting approximately 1,300 members.
