March 9, 2022 - Greg Grant will be conducting a controlled burn on his 20 acres of longleaf pine in Arcadia on Sunday, March 13. In addition to creating a scenic, open, park-like pine forest and promoting native grasses and wildflowers, regular prescribed fire reduces fuel loads, decreasing the chance of catastrophic fires during the summer; controls underbrush, diseases, and insects; and promotes wildlife habitat for deer, turkey, quail, pollinators, and pine savanna songbirds. For more information on prescribed fire, visit the websites for the Texas A&M Forest Service and The Longleaf Alliance.

March 4, 2022 - The West Shelby County Volunteer Fire Department responded to a call of a dog trapped in a water well on Wednesday, March 1, 2022. It is believed the dog had been trapped in the well since the previous night.
When the fire rescue personnel arrived at the property of Billy Lofgren off State Highway 7 West, the dog was in the 50 foot deep well clinging to branches and debris in the bottom.

As the rescuers began working to rescue the dog, they were assisted by Jason Burch with Hughes Wrecker Service in trying to get the dog out using a winch line. Firemen on scene utilized a stand by placing it over the well opening. They then used a winch line to help lower the owner down into the well to retrieve his dog.
Once they were both pulled back out to safety the dog was in good condition and only appeared to have received minor scrapes and scratches from the incident.
The owner was visibly pleased to have his dog safely back and the dog was excited to once again have its freedom.

March 3, 2022 - The Joaquin Volunteer Fire Department was paged out to a structure fire on Highway 84 East at 10:54pm on March 2, 2022. Once on the scene, the first responders found a house fully engulfed with flame. After a brief attack on the fire from a few different angles, the firefighters made a knock-down on the blaze, and were able to begin putting out the hot spots.
Responding to the call were three trucks from the Joaquin Volunteer Fire Department, and two from DeSoto Fire District #1. No one was harmed in the fire but the house was a complete loss.

March 3, 2022 - Officials with the National Forests and Grasslands in Texas, Angelina and Sabine National Forests, have advised a prescribed burn today around 10:00am in the Angelina N. F. - Compartment 1, located at Norwood Community, 145 acres, Block D Only. Winds are predicted from the South at 3-7 MPH.
Please drive with caution. Also, we advised a long range drift SMOKE may affect some of the areas.
March 2, 2022 - Due to a broken water main the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has required the Choice water system ID# 2100005 to notify customers that were without water March 1, 2022 on 2140, south of 2140 on 96, any dirt roads in the area ( anyone without water) to boil their water, prior to consumption (e.g., washing hands/face, brushing teeth, drinking, etc). Children, seniors, and persons with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable to harmful bacteria, and all customers should follow these directions.
To ensure destruction of all harmful bacteria and other microbes, water for drinking, cooking, and ice making should be boiled and cooled prior to use for drinking water or human consumption purposes. The water should be brought to a vigorous rolling boil and then boiled for two minutes.
In lieu of boiling, individuals may purchase bottled water or obtain water from some other suitable source for drinking water or human consumption purposes.
When it is no longer necessary to boil the water, the public water system officials will notify customers that the water is safe for drinking water or human consumption purposes.
Once the boil water notice is no longer in effect, the public water system will issue a notice to customers that rescinds the boil water notice in a manner similar to this notice.
Please share this information with all the other people who drink this water, especially those who may not have received this notice directly (for example, people in apartments, nursing homes, schools, and businesses). You can do this by posting this notice in a public place or distributing copies by hand or mail.
If you have questions concerning this matter, you may contact Matt Di Verdi 936-591-4346
