It is no longer necessary to boil the water prior to consumption.

August 23, 2016 - Due to a leak and water line break, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has required the City of Huxley water system PWS 2100019 to notify customers of the need to boil their water in the FM 2747 and CR 2582 areas prior to consumption.

To ensure destruction of all harmful bacteria and other microbes, water for drinking, cooking, and making ice should be boiled and cooled prior to use. The water should be brought to a vigorous, rolling boil and then boiled for two minutes. In lieu of boiling, you may purchase bottled water or obtain water from some other suitable source.

When it is no longer necessary to boil the water, the water system officials will notify you that the water is safe for consumption. Instructions to discontinue boiling will be issued in the same manner as this notice.

If you have questions concerning this matter, you may contact Huxley City Hall at 936-368-2266 or Huxley Water Treatment Plant at 936-368-2633.

August 30, 2016 - Today, Jennifer Fountain, Shelby County Clerk, reminded Texans that voters who cannot obtain one of the seven forms of approved photo ID now have additional options when voting in person.

“My office is working to make sure all the voters in Shelby County are ready to cast a ballot,” said Fountain. “These new options for voters who cannot obtain photo ID are currently in place and will be used in the November Election.”

As provided by a court order, if a voter has a reasonable impediment to obtaining one of the seven forms of approved photo ID, the voter may vote by (1) signing a declaration at the polls explaining why the voter is unable to obtain one of the seven forms of approved photo ID, and (2) providing one of various forms of supporting documentation.

Supporting documentation can be a certified birth certificate (must be an original), a valid voter registration certificate, a copy or original of one of the following: current utility bill, bank statement, government check, or paycheck, or other government document that shows the voter’s name and an address, although government documents which include a photo must be original and cannot be copies. If a voter meets these requirements and is otherwise eligible to vote, the voter will be able to cast a regular ballot in the election.

The seven forms of approved photo ID are:
• Texas driver license issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS)
• Texas Election Identification Certificate issued by DPS
• Texas personal identification card issued by DPS
• Texas license to carry a handgun issued by DPS
• United States military identification card containing the person’s photograph
• United States citizenship certificate containing the person’s photograph
• United States passport

With the exception of the U.S. citizenship certificate, the approved photo ID must be current or have expired no more than four years before being presented for voter qualification at the polling place.

Voters with a disability may continue to apply with the county registrar for a permanent exemption to showing approved photo ID (which now may be expired no more than four years) at the polls. Also, voters who (1) have a consistent religious objections to being photographed or (2) do not present one of the seven forms of approved photo ID because of certain natural disasters as declared by the President of the United States or the Texas Governor, may continue apply for a temporary exemption to showing approved photo ID at the polls.

Voters can learn more by visiting VoteTexas.gov or calling 1-800-252-VOTE.

August 24, 2016 - A line item transfer of $2,500 was made to the Justice of the Peace Precinct 5 budget during the Shelby County Commissioners Court meeting held on August 22, 2016.

Michael Crouch, Justice of the Peace Precinct 5, addressed the commissioners about the need for assistance regarding expenditures in his office supplies by $894. He explained the reason for the expenditure is two docket books for his court.

Roscoe McSwain, Commissioner Precinct 1, remarked the office supply budget for JP 5 was $1,100.

McSwain asked, "So in this budget right here we're looking at he was budgeted $1,100 for last year and he's done spent $1,981?"

Clint Porterfield, Shelby County Auditor, gave some background on the JP Precinct 5 budget. He stated the outside auditor for the county challenged the county to address negative numbers in budget balances.

"I would like to just as a point of accountability and transparency, work on that a little bit more diligently starting now and in the coming year with departments, with the emphasis of looking at their budgets and being aware of negative balances and coming to court and explaining those balances if funding is needed or if line item transfers are needed," said Porterfield.

He explained in the past, line item transfers were left to the auditor's office to do at their discretion and he said it should be a department function. Porterfield stated Judge Crouch had some unexpected radio expenses at the beginning of the year. Those expenses were paid for out of the office supply budget, because there was no other way to afford the expense.

"What he's asking today is just for some additional funding," said Porterfield.

A motion carried by the commissioners to approve a $2,500 line item transfer to Crouch's budget.

The meeting adjourned at 9:55am.

Agenda items approved during the meeting:
1. Pay monthly expenses.
2. Adopt the Sheriff and Constable Fees for the 2017 fiscal year to take effect on January 1, 2017.

August 24, 2016 - (Editor's note: The individual who ran from the ambulance was in the custody of the Shelby County Sheriff's Department and not that of the ACE EMS personnel. While under the medical care of EMS personnel and as the amulance was en-route to the hospital, a demand was made by the individual to stop the ambulance and let him out, which the driver did. This is something EMS personnel are legally required to do if an individual being transported makes such a request.)

Eyewitness accounts stated he tried to get into a vehicle that was passing by; however, ambulance personnel made them leave.

Fuller ran into a wooded area along the roadway and in the direction of Lakewood subdivision.

Law enforcement and the Center Fire Department responded to the scene and began searching for Fuller. The CPD K-9 was called in to assist in searching the area; however, Fuller had too much of a lead in his escape for him to be located.

The search of that particular area was called off at 11pm. At this time Fuller remains at large and the Shelby County Sheriff's Department is investigating the incident.

According to the Shelby County Jail log the other involved party, Justin Fuller, was charged with assault family violence, misdemeanor a.

August 22, 2016 - AUSTIN – Late yesterday, U.S. District Judge Reed O’Connor’s issued a nationwide injunction prohibiting the Obama administration from enforcing its bathroom directives against public schools across the country.  Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton represents a 13-state coalition in the federal court lawsuit in the Northern District of Texas challenging the Obama administration’s unlawful federal directive that schools allow students to use whatever bathrooms and other intimate facilities they prefer. Attorney General Paxton released the following statement after the court’s ruling in favor of the Texas-led coalition:

“We are pleased that the court ruled against the Obama Administration’s latest illegal federal overreach. This President is attempting to rewrite the laws enacted by the elected representatives of the people, and is threatening to take away federal funding from schools to force them to conform. That cannot be allowed to continue, which is why we took action to protect States and School Districts, who are charged under state law to establish a safe and disciplined environment conducive to student learning.”

The court prevented the federal government from relying on its flawed, unlawful guidance documents to schools and employers in an injunction that is effective nationwide.
