January 7, 2015 - COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Changing the way the South recognizes and prepares for wildfire, a 17-year Texas A&M Forest Service employee was honored Tuesday with the Vice Chancellor’s Award in Excellence for Public Service in Forestry.

Geospatial Systems Coordinator Curt Stripling received the award during the annual Texas A&M AgriLife Conference held at Texas A&M University’s flagship campus in College Station.

The Award in Excellence for Public Service in Forestry is one of 17 awards presented each year by the Vice Chancellor for Agriculture and Life Sciences as a way to recognize and celebrate the commitment and contributions made by those working under the umbrella of Texas A&M Agrilife.

The forestry award, in particular, is presented each year to someone who consistently goes above and beyond, making exceptional contributions and displaying exceptional commitment to the agency’s mission.

“Texas A&M Forest Service is recognized nationally as a leader in the development of wildfire risk assessments thanks in large part to the work and expertise of Curt Stripling. He is very deserving of this award,” Tom Spencer, department head of Predictive Services said.

Stripling’s most recent project helped take the highly complex nature of wildfire risk assessment and deliver it in an easy to use format designed to increase public awareness and understanding of the dangers of wildfire across the state of Texas and the South. Stripling continues to set a high bar in applying his training in forestry and geospatial sciences to produce and deliver state of the art products that help increase public awareness of wildfire risk.

Stripling earned a Bachelor in Science in forestry from Stephen F. Austin State University and has been a member of the Society of American Foresters since 1996.

“I’m elated to receive this award. It is always a good feeling when others wish to publicly recognize your efforts, especially with a prestigious award like this one. I’m extremely grateful to everyone who assisted with my nomination,” Stripling said.

January 8, 2015 - Due to water main break, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has required our water System, Choice Water, to notify customers of the need to boil their water prior to consumption. This is for the customers that were out of water on 1/06/2015 south end of 96 in the Spann’s chapel area.

To ensure destruction of all harmful bacteria and other microbes, water for drinking, cooking, and making ice should be boiled and cooled prior to use. The water should be brought to a vigorous, rolling boil and then boiled for two minutes.

In lieu of boiling, you may purchase bottled water or obtain water from some other suitable source.

When it is no longer necessary to boil the water, the water system officials will notify you that the water is safe for consumption. Instructions to discontinue boiling will be issued in the same manner as this notice.

If you have any questions concerning this matter, you may contact

January 2, 2015 - A flash flood watch in effect for parts of east and northeast Texas, including Shelby County, Carthage, Lufkin Texas, South Central Arkansas, and Northwest and North Central Louisiana to a line southeast of Magnolia, Arkansas to Shreveport, LA.

Showers and thunderstorms will produce heavy rainfall overnight and on Saturday across an area that had received 2 to 3 inches recently. Flash flood watch in effect from 9pm this evening through Saturday afternoon.

From tonight through Saturday afternoon additional rainfall amounts of one to three inches with isolated higher amounts will occur over an area that had received from two to three inches of rain from New Years through early Friday morning. This rain event will be due to a surface low pressure system lifting northeast across the ArkLaTex with a warm front lifting northeast with the low and a cold front trailing southwest from the system as an upper level storm system over Arizona and New Mexico moves northeast out into the plains providing disturbances aloft and added lift and instability. A deep and rich supply of moisture will be available for efficient rain production.

Heavy rainfall over the saturated soils from previous rains will result in rapid water runoff and result in flash flooding and filling of small creeks, streams, rivers, and low water crossing. Do not drive into areas with high or rapid moving water.

A flash flood watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.
You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should flash flood warnings be issued.
