National Nursing Assistants Week Runs Through June 23; NMC Recruiting More Top Talent

Hospital honors its patient care assistants, seeks to recruit more top talent

June 23, 2021 – With new and emerging diseases such as the Delta COVID-19 variant, as well as existing diseases that continue to impact the health of East Texans, nurses and patient care techs are more important than ever to helping save lives. National Nursing Assistants Week, which runs through June 23, is a time to recognize all nursing assistants who care for patients under the direct supervision of doctors and nurses.

Patti Bennett, RN, M.S.N, chief nursing officer for Nacogdoches Medical Center, said all patient care techs (PCTs) play a vital role on their healthcare teams.

“Our PCTs are invaluable. They’re true healthcare heroes. Our doctors and RNs rely on our nursing techs who help them positively impact patient’s lives every day,” Bennett said. “Nursing techs work closely with patients to help them with vital needs such as eating, for example, when they are unable to feed themselves. They’re also excellent problem solvers and communicators who help relay patient needs to the nurses and to the patient’s family members,” Bennett said. “Ultimately, they help patients heal so they can get back to their normal lives.”

Bennett said they welcome anyone who is interested in a career as a PCT at their facility to inquire about opportunities.

Brooks Pannell, RN, director of the Med-Surg (Medical-Surgical) Unit at Nacogdoches Medical Center, said more PCTs are needed particularly in their Med-Surg Unit where their duties are focused on caring for patients who have challenging medical needs or are recovering from surgery. According to the National Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses, the field of medical-surgical nursing is the single largest nursing specialty in the United States.

“We are pleased that Nacogdoches Medical Center offers training opportunities for PCTs to gain skills needed for their career,” Pannell said. “It’s our privilege when we can introduce new top talent to our healthcare teams. They become part of our family and they lift the spirits of our patients every day,” she said.

Nacogdoches Medical Center offers generous sign-on bonuses to PCTs and nurses who are hired.
