On May 17, 1971, a musical premiered at a little theater in New York City. It was called "Godspell" and took its theme from the Book of Matthew, from Christ's famous Sermon on the Mount. In 1973, the "little musical that could" was turned into a successful Hollywood movie. And the live production has been playing somewhere in the world pretty much ever since.
Godspell featured lots of great songs like "By My Side", "Prepare Ye the Way", and "All Good Gifts". Many of the lyrics came directly from hymns, and today, its most famous song, "Day by Day", is included in many hymnals. As a teenager, I wore out the record album and memorized all the piano parts. Like the musical "Jesus Christ Superstar", Godspell brought a Christian message into popular culture, for a new generation of young people.
Stream the movie sometime - it still packs a punch. And presents the teachings of Jesus in a personal, powerful, and beautiful way.
