December 29, 2022 - The Center Fire Department responded to the Shelby County Sheriff's Department at 2:41am December 15, 2022, due to a report of a fire.
When fire personnel arrived, there was smoke within the building and they began their investigation to determine the source of the smoke.
Eventually it was determined the fire was in the crawl space above the laundry room where the jail joins the Sheriff's Department offices.
According to the Center Fire Department, it appeared the cause of the fire was a combination of an electrical issue and lint that had collected in the crawl space.
Fire personnel broke through metal flashing on the exterior of the building and were able to access some smoldering and flames behind it. They were then able to extinguish the flames and ventilate the building with fans.
Once there was no further threat of fire, the Center Fire Department personnel returned to the station at 4:10am.
